Car Transport – How Safe Is It?
One of the things that we hear a lot at American Auto Move is concern over safety. This is of course a legitimate concern, but it is not something that one generally has to worry about from most car transport companies. Safety is always an issue when driving is concern, but you’re actually more likely to have your vehicle damaged while doing your everyday driving than you would be using a car transport service.
Why is it Safer?
The reason is simple: car transport companies, and specifically car transport carriers, are highly regulated. Drivers are allowed only 8 hours on the road per day. Trucks are inspected by the Department of Transportation regularly to ensure the highest operational standards. And by law, a car transport company must hold a surety bond and full coverage insurance. So if in the odd case that something does happen, your property will be insured.
Is Enclosed Car Transport Safer than Open Car Transport?
Generally, no. The safety rates are roughly equal. The one exception, however, is when for shipping low clearance vehicles such as sports cars. Enclosed trailers use soft tie-downs, which restricts the possibility of under chassis damage in certain types of vehicles. Most vehicles ship just fine on open trailers, however.
How Does Insurance Work for Car Transport?
The insurance process for shipping is very similar to the process for car rentals. Before your vehicle is loaded onto the car transport carrier, it will be inspected point by point. Once you and your driver are confident that any pre-existing damages have been marked off on your Bill of Lading, your vehicle will be loaded onto the truck. Once it arrives, you’ll have the opportunity to check the same Bill of Lading, point by point, and compare the diagram therein with your vehicle’s condition. If there is any incidental damage, it will be well-documented and completely insured.
Is the Price of Insurance Included in my Car Transport Quote?
Yes. All of our car transport prices include full insurance coverage. Be aware of car transport brokers who do tag on additional insurance surcharges, as insurance prices are mandated by law and ALWAYS required for open car transport. Period.
Will I Get the Same Protection that I Get from Good Companies as I Get from Bad?
In theory, cheap car transport companies should offer the same insurance as any other company. But the issue that often arises in situations where damages are inflicted during shipping is responsibility shirking. We advise that you not scrimp on your shipping and always use the best car transport company that you can find.
